What Just Happened?

It hasn't even been 24 hours yet. Biggest adventure of all, and I only play a supporting role.

When I got up this morning, my only real plan for the day was to pick my newly ripe tomatoes and make the first toasted tomato sandwich of the year. Maybe dig some potatoes before it rained...

Monday 8am - Donovan starts university on Wednesday. Housing in Calgary has been insane. U of C is trying to negotiate with Mount Royal for residence space. People are living in tents along the creeks. Our most recent lead fell through. We were anticipating a semester of him driving back and forth to the city.

9:45 - Get a text from a past student. "My mom said Donovan was looking for a place. I have a room" I pass contact information on to Donovan.

10:30 - Donovan gets ahold of this wonderful Sundre girl. Asks all the pertinent questions.

11:45 - Apartment accepted. Start packing. By the way, it's starting to rain.

12:41 - On the road to Calgary. It stopped raining. Thank goodness for GPS, 'cause we have no idea where we are going. Thankfully Gavin wants to drive. I seem to have a little something in my eye.

2:00 - After dodging the football crowds at McMahon Stadium, we find the apartment. We are pleasantly surprised to find it in the Kensington area of Calgary. Donovan has no idea how lucky he is! We back the truck up to the first floor balcony and literally lift everything over it. So much easier than navigating stairs and hallways. New roomie hasn't seen the boys since they were in junior high and she was in Grade 12, before their growth spurts!

Donovan has lots of trees outside his window. It seems like a great neighbourhood.

3:30 - New apartment keys in hand, we head off to Ikea. Donovan needs a bed and a desk.

4:00 - Did you know it is possible to get in and out of Ikea in 30 minutes; with a bed, a desk, a chest of drawers, and (very important) his own set of bag clips! We had not eaten anything yet - so quick lunch at Dairy Queen, and back to the apartment.

5:00 - Lifting new purchases over balcony. Donovan is looking a little glazed at the whirlwind of activity and emotion. Gavin takes over building the furniture. Gavin is very good at this sort of thing. Building Ikea furniture is like a right of passage.

A very proud Mom, seeing how well her boys work together!

7:30 - Desk and drawers built. Thankfully, new roomie shared her tools. A real screwdriver makes a big difference. Off for groceries, again very grateful for GPS. We are so tired. Gavin shuts my finger in the car door. Good thing we already built the furniture!

8:30 - Less than 12 hours after this rollercoaster began. What do you mean, I'm supposed to leave my child all alone in the city? Who's crazy idea is that?

10:00 - We get home. Rodeo tells me she had to hide in my room from monsters. She tends to be a little dramatic in her stories, but I can't prove that their weren't any monsters...

I did not get my toasted tomato sandwich.
