Darling Delia
Day One, Part Two
Delia's Main Street. |
Nothing adds charm like a mural! |
Delia, Alberta is the most delightful little village. They are obviously very proud of their heritage. There are storyboards all over town with vintage photos and explanations about the history of the homesteaders and original businesses.
Wooden grain elevators are an endangered species. Such an important part of our prairie and homesteader heritage.
Delia has much to be proud of. It was the first place in Canada to have a woman as the head of a municipality. Violet Barss was mayor in 1919!
Gotta love a General Store with a tractor parked in front. In addition to groceries, they also sell local products and crafts. Bought a Christmas present here! Can't tell you what it is. It's a secret!
If for no other reason, come to Delia because there is a Unicorn Store! Apparently a couple years ago, this unicorn became famous when he was kidnapped! |
Delia's Grist Mill
It's no surprise that Delia was a Communities in Bloom winner in 2017 |
Delia's campground, with a lovely playground and group shelter in the center. If I succeed in one day investing in a campervan, this is the type of place I would stay, to explore a charming village like Delia.
How many of you can say that you have stopped at the Alberta History points throughout our province? How poetic that the first one I stop at is about John Palliser, whose expedition included exploring Southern Alberta.
Even with all the stops I made, I still made it to Medicine Hat at the time appointed, by my mother, so we could meet my brother. He was driving through on his way home. We had an early supper and it was such a lovely day, we sat outside.
Now I am cozily ensconced in Mom's basement, in front of the fireplace. A little wine, a little cheese and a bubble bath. It has been the perfect beginning to my adventure.
