Fairy Door Treasure Hunt
Yes, you read that correctly. The Trolls took us on a Fairy Door treasure hunt, in Clive, Alberta.
It was the Sunday of Labour Day weekend. I have spent every spare minute lately working on Sundre's Fall Fair. That morning I already spent 5 hours weeding the garden (my son thought I went to get a massage - I wish!) It was too beautiful a day to miss out on, and my last full day with Rob's daughter, Daphne, before school starts.
We parked on one end of Main Street and strolled up and down looking for Fairy Doors. The project started a few years ago with 5 doors; recently four more were added. Each door opens, revealing another scene.
Some have seek and find puzzles painted into it. Some had coloring pictures or word find puzzles to take. All of them had a letter. After finding all 9, you unscramble the letters for a secret word. If it wasn't Sunday, we could have taken the word to the library and received a prize.
Looking at the mural on the side of this building, and the antique farm equipment, you might think it's a museum. It was the curling rink!
Clive has the prettiest trailer dump station I have ever seen! Kids can actually go play in the train.
Lacombe is a very interesting place with some of the most beautiful old buildings in the Prairies. Someday soon, we want to take a day to explore it.
By this time we were getting hungry. Leif and Saga thought we should fish for our supper. I thought the perfect way to end our road trip would be popping into Sylvan Lake for supper. We stopped at the patio of the Rusty Kage Smokehouse, where even the mac & cheese and potato salad go through the smoker. The food was fantastic and the servings so generous, we all brought half our meals home. (I'm sure it had nothing to do with the appetizer of roasted broccoli and homemade kettle chips with queso cheese dip!)
Of course, you have to have a little walk along the beach after. These are my favorite kinds of day adventures. Ambling around the countryside, exploring little hidden treasures and stopping wherever your fancy strikes.
We are pretty organized with our adventures bag for wilderness trips. First aid, bear spray, binoculars, etc. We learned that we need to keep a supply of hats in the car. Daphne left her hat in Calgary, so on the sunny patio, we had to take turns with my big blue hat! It won't be long and we will have these road trips down to a fine science!
